Shot of Wonder: what the octopus teaches us still

What an octopus and a restless mind remind us of about leadership and presence

Here’s a new Shot of Wonder video I made for you.

Although I don’t discuss clients in this video, making the video reminded me of a former client. He had difficulty sitting still for long without feeling guilty and restless.

“I’m not doing enough” was one of his key downer patterns.

He was seeking “What’s next?” in his business and career path while his days were packed with customer responsibilities and meetings, yet that downer voice kept speaking up.

The curious thing we explored is this: Maybe in being still more often, he could ultimately discover how to do less now so he could do more of what beckons him in his emergent near-future horizon.

What’s your relationship to being still?

What do you think of when you think of being still?

Why bother if you’re a leader, entrepreneur, knowledge worker, professional, or other change-maker?

The latest Shot of Wonder video takes its cue from my rewatching the fascinating documentary The Octopus Teacher, and it unexpectedly ties right into this topic.

Oh! Watch this Shot of Wonder to the closing scene as an unexpected guest arrives just to illustrate my very point! Serendipity.

What are Shots of Wonder?

By the way, a big thank you to everyone who replied last week and said in essence, “Create, produce and share more Shots of Wonder videos!”

I also loved receiving some of your wonders back. I appreciated

’s connection to systems thinking as well as ’s musings on remote mockingbirds. Sharing wonder and curiosity is a demonstrated way to expand one another’s thinking about possibility. Thanks.

Refresher: I’ve been seeking a new, fun way - in addition to articles, essays, and The Wonder Dispatch - for you and me to engage and think expansively together.

And, admit it, you likely don’t always have or make time to read more words.

So, what if you and I wondered aloud more together in a more fun exchange?

What if upon occasion I gave you a Shot of Wonder - a brief, active video walk-and-wander where we see how unexpected inspirations can illuminate useful insights? I want a medium that honors both my wide-eyed wondrous being and my clear-eyed strategist to walk with you. Let’s experiment.

»> I invite you to wonder out loud back with us in the Comments or reply.

Psst… The first Shot was free as will always be the Sunday Wonder Dispatch. If you want more Shots of Wonder and more say in what I offer, be sure to upgrade your subscription as if you haven’t already. We’re dreaming up other fun ways to create, build, and lead together this season.

Up your wonder ratio. More good things to come. Thanks.
